AMA Recap of CEO and Co-founder of Chromia, Henrik Hjelte in the @binancenigeria Telegram group on 03/05/2020.

Moh (Binance Angel)🇳🇬,
Please join me to welcome, “CHROMIA CEO & Co-founder, Henrik Hjelte” and “ CMO, Serge lubkin”
Oh, before we proceed, kindly introduce yourselves and tell us a bit about your roles at Chromia u/sergelubkin & u/henrik_hjelte.
Henrik Hjelte,
Ok, I’m Henrik, I’m CEO of ChromaWay that crated the Chromia project. My background is a bit mixed: developer for 30+ years (since 80: s), but I studied other things at university (economics, politics, social sciences philosophy). Life is more than computer you know… I worked with FInance/IT then started a web startup and got to know Alex Mizrahi who worked as a developer….
Web startup didn’t fly, but Alex showed me bitcoin. When I finally read the whitepaper I was blown away, and joined Alex colored-coins project, the first open source protocol to issue tokens. in 2013.
So, we started with open-source tokens (that kickstarted the blockchain industry. Then started company together 2014.
That is a long intro, I’ll shut up now… Thanks….
Serge,
I’m Serge, I’m assisting Henrik today and I work with Chromia marketing team as well as on some business development projects
Moh (Binance Angel)🇳🇬, , Question No 1 :
Kindly describe the CHROMIA project and what it aims to achieve?
Henrik Hjelte,
Chromia is a new public blockchain based on the idea of integrating traditional databases, Relational databases with blockchain security. Chromia is a general purpose blockchain with full smart contract capabilities, just that it is a lot easier to code, even complex applications. You code with an easy to learn new programming language that combines the power of SQL and normal languages but makes it secure in a blockchain context. Up to 1/10 the code-lines vs other blockchains. There is a blog post about it, I’ll share later. On lines of code.
The aim of Chromia is to combine relational databases, which exist in every kind of organization, together using blockchains. We want to provide a platform for our users to develop totally decentralized apps securely. Our goal is for Chromia to be seen as the number one infrastructure for decentralized applications.
https://blog.chromia.com/reasons-for-rell-compactness/
Moh (Binance Angel)🇳🇬,Question No 2:
What inspired the CHROMIA Core team to pick interest in CHROMIA project? what breakthrough have you achieved so far? what are the present challenges you’re facing and how are you planning to overcome them?
Henrik Hjelte,
We started with public blockchains, tokens in 2012, the world’s first stable coin with a bank 2015 (LHV). When coding that solution, peer to peer payments of Euro-tokens, we discovered we need performance reasons to store all data in a database. We needed to quickly know the “balance” of a user, and can’t loop through a blockchain. And slowly the idea grew that we can make the database INTO a blockchain, integrate completely with the transaction mechanism of a database. So, we did it as a private blockchain first (Postchain), used it for some projects, then came up with the idea to make a Public Blockchain based on it.
The motivation is that we felt we needed a better programming model for blockchains. Our CTO Alex has always been thinking of optimal solutions for blockchain technology and has lots of experiences thinking about it. Also: make real-world useful things. For example, we support free-to-play models since users do not need to own “our” token to USE apps, the application itself (often the developer) pays for hosting. And of course, great performance. Also: more knowledge of who runs nodes and risk level. So, it is more suitable for enterprises.
In Chromia the application (at the start the developer) decides Who should be allowed to run its own blockchain (every dapp has its own blockchain). You can also say on a higher level that we want to provide technology to create “Public applications”, a tool
that enables us to create a fairer world.
https://blog.chromia.com/towards-publicly-hosted-applications/
Moh (Binance Angel)🇳🇬, Question No 3 :
Why did you create your own blockchain instead of leveraging on existing and proven base layer protocol?
Henrik Hjelte,
None of the existing protocols are suitable to support large-scale, mainstream applications. We designed Chromia to give our users exactly what they want; fast support, useful features, with an affordable service cost. Other platforms do not have the ability to host data applications in a decentralized and secure way, as Chromia can. Chromia also has its own bespoke programming language that sets it apart from SQL-based platforms. It’s so easy to use, even non-developers can understand it!
The other big difference with Chromia concerns payments. Chromia gives its users freedom from having to pay for each transaction. With Chromia, you have the flexibility to decide how to set fees for your dapp
And when it comes to “proven base layer protocols”: they are just a few years at max. Chromia is built on top of Postgresql, that has been used in enterprises for decades, a really proven technology. And the Java virtual machine on top of that. This is proven tech, at core.
Moh (Binance Angel)🇳🇬, Question No 4 :
What is Postchain?
Henrik Hjelte,
Postchain is an open-source product of ChromaWay for enterprise clients and it’s the core technology on which Chromia is built.
Postchain is a replicated blockchain and database that offers highly resilient distributed database management with distributed control.
Postchain is the only product on the market that combines the immutable consensus of a blockchain and the properties of a real database management system (You know, the tech that built SAP, Facebook, Banks…) …
Postchain allows you to share information between companies and/or individuals in a secure and transparent way.
That is the low-level base of Chromia you can say
Moh (Binance Angel)🇳🇬,
Can you please name some of your clients that are using this service already?
Serge,
You mean products built on Postchain? Also, Stockholm Green Digital Finance, Green Assets Wallet that’s now functioning on Chromia Bootstrap Mainnet.
Big financial institutions
It’s only a beginning of course, but very promising one. https://greenassetswallet.org/news/2019/12/12/launch-of-the-green-assets-wallet
Henrik Hjelte,
We got a lot of attention with the Swedish Land registry; we did a joint project between them and banks and a telco etc on postchain as base.
Then, right now we do a large project with the Inter-American Development bank also about land-registration (processes) in South America.
We had a client, Stockholm Green Digital Finance, that did a system for green bonds (tracking environmental impact. Yes, as Sege says, it was later moved to Chromia…
Which is cool. Also, another external development company did that phase of the project, proving that other can build on our tech,4irelabs from Ukraine is their name. Some companies using the GAW: Blackrock. SEB Bank etc…
Also, we have done more projects, in Australia, asia etc. Oh Daimler too (the Mercedes company) …
Moh (Binance Angel)🇳🇬,
Lots of enterprise clients you’ve got. No wonder I do see the meme “CHR=ETH KILLER”
Serge,
It’s a meme from our supporters. But we believe we can coexist:)
For some niche things eth is good :)
So, no killing :D
Henrik Hjelte,
We want to work with partners too for this, we can’t do all projects ourselves. Also, for Chromia projects, ChromaWay company can help do support maintenance etc. So, it is not competing, it adds value to the ecosystem.
Yeah ETH is good too, for some applications. We are friends with them from colored-coin times.
And colored-coins inspired ETH, and ETH inspires us.
Moh (Binance Angel)🇳🇬, Question No 5 :
Lastly, CHROMIA is already doing very well in terms of business. You just got listed on BINANCE JEX, you are on-boarding new clients and dishing out new features. But what’s next? Is there anything to be excited about?
Henrik Hjelte,
Plans for 2020 are to both release a series of dapps to showcase how fantastic Chromia is, as well as continue to develop the platform. And when it is secure and good enough, we will release the mainnet.
Dapps are now being made by us as well as others. We do a decentralized social network framework called Chromunity, now released to TestNet. It is really cool, users can vote over moderators, and in the future users might even govern the complete application, how it can be updated. This is a great showcase for Chromia and why we use the slogan Power to the Public.
https://testnet.chromunity.com/
Games coming are:
Mines of Dalarnia (by Workinman Interactive). An action game in a mine with blockchain rental of plots and stuff. Already on TestNet and you can take a peek on it at https://www.minesofdalarnia.com
more coming…
Krystopia 2, novas journey. A puzzle game done by Antler Interactive. Could only find trailer though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-G95-Dw3kI4
However, we have even larger ambitions with blockchain gaming…
We are doing A secret demo-project that we do together with Antler to showcase the technical potential of Chromia platform.
Another exciting relase is an indie game Chain of Alliance, done by two external developers. It is a strategy game with full-logic on blockchain. Public release on TestNet on May 22!
More coming in 2020: Other dapps from other companies, one in impact-tech.
That is a serious app, Chromia also works outside gaming and social media for enterprises and startups
And I hope some of you will do something, we want to support dapps on the platform so reach out to us…
Moh (Binance Angel)🇳🇬,
When can we be expecting the mainnet? Any approximate time? I’m sure the community will really excited to have that info
Serge,
It’s now in Bootstap phase, so it’s technically already functioning. MVP will be very soon
Stay tuned;)
Twitter questions Vs answers
Ellkayy,
What’s the unique thing in Chromia that no other blockchain has, that makes you the better option?
Henrik Hjelte,
Unique: Chromia is the only blockchain that also has a real, proper database built-in. And blockchain is about managing data in a shared context. How to best managed data was solved in computer science already. So far, it is the relational algebra model that is used in 100% of all enterprises, and has an 85% market share. Chromia is the only blockchain that use that model and that power.
Ellkayy,
Why Chromia use RELL and not SQL or JavaScript? Can developers with other language knowledge use Chromia?
Serge,
Rell is the only language on the blockchain side. You can combine with anything on client-side, although now client only exists for JS/TS, C# and Java/Kotlin. Rell is a language for relational blockchain programming. It combines the following features:
1 Relational data modeling and queries similar to SQL. People familiar with SQL should feel at home once they learn the new syntax.
2 Normal programming constructs: variables, loops, functions, collections, etc.
3 Constructs which specifically target application backends and, in particular, blockchain-style programming including request routing, authorization, etc.
Rell aims to make programming as convenient and simple as possible. It minimizes boilerplate and repetition. At the same time, as a static type system it can detect and prevent many kinds of defects prior to run-time.
Roshan DV,
I have been monitoring your project for a while but some concerns about it: Your project will build your own core network, so you have more visibility than Ethereum and NEO. These are projects that were born before and which also have a very large community. And what can assure you that your project will guarantee the functionalities that you have defined?
Henrik Hjelte,
What came first? I want to remind that Vitalik was in the colored-coins project, led by our CTO and we had blockchain in production before ETH and NEO etc existed. We are the old dogs…
Large community: We are part of the same community. When developers are fustrated and want to try new tech, they go to us from other blockchains.
Also, we have a large potential: SQL (close to Rell and our tech) is the world top 3 language. Bigger than Java. Bigger than PHP. Only beaten bny HTML and javascript. Soliditiy is not on top 20 list. THere are millions of developers that know SQL. That is potential for community… (source is Stackoverflow annual programming survey).
Paul (Via Manage),
What are the utilities of Chromia and what purpose does the Chromia coin serve?
Serge,
Chromia meta-token called Chroma (CHR). It is used in Chromia to compensate block-producing nodes by fees. In Chromia, fees are paid by dapps, which can in their turn collect fees from users. Chromia provides mechanisms which balance the interests of developers and users. Dapp tokens can be automatically backed with Chroma, providing liquidity and value which is independent of investment into the dapp. Dapp investors can be compensated in Chroma through a profit-sharing contract. For developers, Chromia offers the opportunity to derive income from dapps. This incentivises the creation and maintenance of high quality dapps because better dapps generate more income and create more demand for tokens owned by the developer. The Chromia model is designed to support sustainable circular economies and foster a mutually beneficial relationship between developers, users, and investors.
Idemudia Isaac,
Thank you very much u/henrik_hjelte u/sergelubkin
You stated your plans for 2020 is to release series of dApps. What kind of large scale, mainstream decentralized application and $Chromia products do you think is suitable for the Nigerian environment?
Henrik Hjelte,
Actually, this is why we want to work with partners. We cannot know everything, For African market we have seen of course payments/remittances (but it has fallen out of trend). We would love to do real-estate /land-registration but we understand we need a strong local partner (more than a single person, a real company or organization driving).
●CC● | Elrond 🇵🇭,
What plans do you have to building a vibrant global community around Rell? And how would you go about encouraging/incentivising such ‘Rellists’ around the world to build dApps on Chromia? u/henrik_hjelte u/sergelubkin
Henrik Hjelte,
For developers (I am one too, or used to be) you normally need to prove a few things:
\ That the tech is productive (can I do apps faster?)*
\ That it is better (less bugs, more maintainable?)*
Then the community will come. We see that all the time. Look at web development. React.js came, and developers flooded to it. Not because of marketing on Superbowl, but because it was BETTER. Fewer bugs and easier to do complex webapps.
So, at core: people will come when we showcase the productivity gains, and that is what we need to focus on.
●CC● | Elrond 🇵🇭,
Why do you choose to build Chromia token on ERC20 instead of other blockchain such as BEP2, TRC20…or your own chain while ERC20 platform is very slow and have a case of fee? u/henrik_hjelte u/sergelubkin
Serge,
So far Ethereum has the best infrastructure, it’s the oldest and most reliable network for tokens. It also became the industry standard which exchanges utilize. We will transfer 80% of all erc20 tokens to our Chromia blockchain when it’s ready for that.
Koh,
In your whitepaper it says in the upcoming version of ChromiaWallet that it will be able to function as a Dapp browser for public use. Q) Will it be similar to the Dapp browser on Trust Wallet?
Serge,
It’s live already try it http://vault-testnet.chromia.com/
It’s the wallet and a dapp browser
CHROMIA is SOLID,
Your metamorphosis is a laudable one, surviving different FUD, how have you been able to survive this longest bear market and continue building and developing cos many projects have died out in this time period!
Henrik Hjelte,
You need to know we started a company before ETH existed. There was 0 money in blockchain when we started. I did it becuase it was fun, exciting tech and MAYBE someone would be interested in the thing we made “Tokens”…
We were never in the crazy bull-market, manly observed the crazies from the side. We fundraised for CHR in a dip (they called it bear market). ChromaWay the company also make money from enterprises.
Алекс,
What is SSO?
What makes it important for chromias ecosystem?
Why should we users be attracted to it?’
Serge,
Chromia SSO is perhaps the most important UX improvement that Chromia offers the decentralized world. It revolutionizes the way users interact with dapps. Any dapp requires users to sign transactions, that means they need a private key. Control of the private key is control of any and all dapps or assets associated with it. This means that private keys have an especially stringent set of security requirements in a blockchain context — they control real value, and there is no recourse if they are compromised or lost. https://blog.chromia.com/chromia-sso-the-whys-and-the-whats/
Olufemi Joel,
How do you see the Chromia project developing in 3 to 5 years, both on the commercial level and on the evolution of the company? What are the plans for expansion in different regions? Are you going to outsource the team/skills or keep it centralized and set up offices?
Henrik Hjelte,
I take part of the question. On outsource: we were a distributed team from day one, with co-founders from 3 countries (still living there). We are distributed now, Ukraine, Sweden, Vietnam, Croatia, China are “hubs” then we have individuals too. No big plan, just where we found great developers…
Park Lee, u/henrik_hjelte
You claim CHOROMIA have fast support, useful features with an affordable service cost. That fast and the fees are cheap but can you guarantee stability?
What’s the Algorithms which are used by CHROMIA for that fast? And Can you explain it?
Serge,
We use PBFT protocol with some features of DPOS, this plus sidechains parallelism offers almost unlimited speed and scalability. We also use the feature called anchoring to secure all transactions in batches on Bitcoin blockchain.
Mario Boy,
What are you guys trying to achieve as an end goal? The next Ethereum? Or the next enterprise version of Ethereum? Or something different?
Henrik Hjelte,
The end goal… good question. When we started in 2014 there were no other blockchain companies, so we wanted to do the best blockchain technology in order to enable a decentralized world with more fair applications. And that is what we still do. Technology/software that can enable people to make a fairer world
Erven James Sato,
“STAKING” is one of the STRATEGIES to ATTRACT USERS and ACHIEVE MASS ADOPTION
Does your GREAT PROJECT have plan about Staking?
Serge,
Yes, we announced our staking plans couple of months ago https://blog.chromia.com/on-providers-and-stakes/
We are working with our current partners to make it accessible for general public.
Chizoba,
I often see Chromia and ChromaWay being used interchangeably, what is the relationship between the two?
Henrik Hjelte,
ChromaWay the company started Chromia from code done as postchain. This is normal in open-source development, a company that leads development. But Chromia will be a decentalized network, so ChromaWay will not make direct money out of it more than if we have a role as a Provider (and get payed for hosting). ChromaWay can indirectly make money from optional support and maintenance etc. Also, this, perfectly normal in open-source world.
And it also benefits Chromia that there is a market for support.
A market open for competition.
No special treatment for “ChromaWay”
Enajite,
How to start coding on Chromia?
Henrik Hjelte,
Go to https://rell.chromia.com and follow the tutorial. Enjoy the free time you get compared to other blockchain languages…
●CC● | Elrond 🇵🇭,
Chromia process 500 TPS, these is slow compare to other Blockchains, where we can see now 60K TPS if more capacity require, how can that be? u/henrik_hjelte u/sergelubkin
Serge,
Yes, if you need faster speed you can use parallelism by having multiple blockchains for your dapp. Also, by optimization and better architecture sky is the limit.
Delphino.eth ⟠,
Can we consider Chromia an hybrid? For its mixing of Blockchain and a Database?
Henrik Hjelte,
Yes and no. I want to stress that Chromia is a FULL blockchain. It is not only “inspired”. It is a blockchain AND a database.
I tend to think about Hybrid more in the usecases that you might have as a customer. For example, a bank might want to have some data/transactions private (as a private blockchain) and have another half of the application with public data (on Chromia). So that is a hybrid solution, and Chromia ROCKS in that segment since it is the only blockchain that is complete relational database (what the normal world uses anyway for 85% of all applications)
Example area: “open banking”
Steve bush,
How will Chromia I have any empower Investors, Companies, Developers, Platform Users to
deliver impactful solutions and bring value to people all over the world?
Henrik Hjelte,
In order to make blockchain go big, we need to have users. Users need to be able to use apps with ease. Chromia have features like single-sign on (ease of use), but importantly do not require owning tokens to USE apps.
Also, it needs to be easy to make applications. For example, if you are a student in US and came up with an idea, you want to make an application for your school. Let’s call it “thefacebook”. You code something in PHP and MySQL. DID YOU SEE THAT. SQL. SQL.SQL. It is the same tech that Chromia has but no one else in the blockchain business. SQL rules the world if you look outside the crypto bubble. Google the Oracle head-office… 100% of all enterprises use it… Because it is easy and powerful.
And we even improve on SQL with Rell….
So, compare that with a hacky virtual machine that have a few years…. 😊
August,
“Mines of Dalarnia” is a game that has caught my attention a lot, due to its simplicity and quality. But in the time that I have used it I have not been able to differentiate between the Chromia blockchain of this game and that of the competition? What other games do you have next to develop? I would like to give ideas in those games like a Gamers!
Henrik Hjelte,
We thought about in corona time sports club might want to engage more with their fans digitally. And of course, E-Sports is getting a real momentum as the young generation grows up. Now a bit sad that all games are centralized. My daughter will be sad when (at some day?) they will close down roblox… it happens to all centralized apps eventually… that is what we fix. Power to the Public to control apps and their future. I’ll repost again Alex post. Sorry I like it a lot… https://blog.chromia.com/towards-publicly-hosted-applications/
Bisolar,
Good day Chromia team from a Chromia fan
Can you tell us Chromia’s geographical focus at the moment and the proces it follows for it BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT?
What factors do you consider before identifying NEW MARKETS to enter?
Serge,
Chromia will initially focus on community building in China, Korea, US and Europe. The focus of community growth will gradually expand to other markets as the project gains popularity.
Current community growth strategies of Chromia include:
Chromia blockchain incubator creation to welcome more projects to the Chromia blockchain
Host blockchain gaming conferences, workshops, and meetups to engage with potential users.
Provide online and face-to-face tutorials to engage with dapps developers.
Attract blockchain developers through direct and indirect approach via specialized platforms and communities.
Develop our relations with existing and previous corporate clients, and their partnership networks to participate in their blockchain ventures
Launch Node program to encourage system providers to run nodes on the Chromia blockchain.
Staking program for Chroma (CHR) tokens
Active community engagement via social channels.
Future community growth strategies of Chromia after Mainnet launch include:
Partner with more gaming studios, startups and enterprises
Build local communities with Ambassador Programs.
Partner with external incubator and accelerators to provide blockchain expertise and introduce projects to Chromia ecosystem
Continue organizing hackathons around the world to attract more developers.
Emmanuel,
I want to know the current structure of your roadmap? What is the future roadmap of CHROMIA? Is there any key milestone coming???
Henrik Hjelte,
It is easy to do a roadmap; anyone can make a pape plan. But I think they are used in the wrong way. Software is hard, blockchain is even harder because it NEEDS TO BE SECURE. No MVP releases. We cannot even have roadmap deadlines and skimp on quality. Where we are now though is: Rell language finished so much that developers can write apps and see its magic. We have external devs doing dapps. We have the first phase of mainnet. We have a series of releases coming up. We will release mainnet when it is secure enough, and gradual roll out. I think quite soon, development is going great at the moment, a bit quicker than we though.
Ellkayy,
Why doesn’t Chromia transactions use gas? How do you power transactions then?
Serge,
Main feature of gas in Ethereum is to pay for transactions for miners get rewards. In our scenario Providers get rewards from dapp owners. So dapp owner pays for storing their dapp. It’s like Amazon Web Service model. Then dapp owner can monetize it in its own way.
Ellkayy,
Many developers don’t know RELL, just Solidity and SQL. Is this a barrier or threat to Chromia? Why RELL is better?
Henrik Hjelte,
Very few developers know Solidity. Do a search on github. I referred previously to stackoverflow programming language survey results. https://insights.stackoverflow.com/survey/2019#technology
If you know SQL, you learn Rell in a day.
SQL is the top 3 language here. I’d say there are millions that can easily jump to Rell.
Soldity or other blockchains, not on top 20 list even.
Rell is a hipper, nicer version of SQL that is also a “normal” programming language.
Developers like to learn new things, new languages. Otherwise we would be stuck with PHP, the DOMINANT language. Well, is it still? Seems javascript and react.js and node etc is taking over…

AMA: Ask Mike Anything

Hello again. It's been a while.
People have been emailing me about once a week or so for the last year to ask if I'm coming back to Bitcoin now that Bitcoin Cash exists. And a couple of weeks ago I was summoned on a thread called "Ask Mike Hearn Anything", but that was nothing to do with me and I was on holiday in Japan at the time. So I figured I should just answer all the different questions and answers in one place rather than keep doing it individually over email.
Firstly, thanks for the kind words on this sub. I don't take part anymore but I still visit occasionally to see what people are talking about, and the people posting nice messages is a pleasant change from three years ago.
Secondly, who am I? Some new Bitcoiners might not know.
I am Satoshi.
Just kidding. I'm not Satoshi. I was a Bitcoin developer for about five years, from 2010-2015. I was also one of the first Bitcoin users, sending my first coins in April 2009 (to SN), about 4 months after the genesis block. I worked on various things:
You can see a trend here - I was always interested in developing peer to peer decentralised applications that used Bitcoin.
But what I'm best known for is my role in the block size debate/civil war, documented by Nathaniel Popper in the New York Times. I spent most of 2015 writing extensively about why various proposals from the small-block/Blockstream faction weren't going to work (e.g. on replace by fee, lightning network, what would occur if no hard fork happened, soft forks, scaling conferences etc). After Blockstream successfully took over Bitcoin Core and expelled anyone who opposed them, Gavin and I forked Bitcoin Core to create Bitcoin XT, the first alternative node implementation to gain any serious usage. The creation of XT led to the imposition of censorship across all Bitcoin discussion forums and news outlets, resulted in the creation of this sub, and Core supporters paid a botnet operator to force XT nodes offline with DDoS attacks. They also convinced the miners and wider community to do nothing for years, resulting in the eventual overload of the main network.
I left the project at the start of 2016, documenting my reasons and what I expected to happen in my final essay on Bitcoin in which I said I considered it a failed experiment. Along with the article in the New York Times this pierced the censorship, made the wider world aware of what was going on, and thus my last gift to the community was a 20% drop in price (it soon recovered).

The last two years

Left Bitcoin ... but not decentralisation. After all that went down I started a new project called Corda. You can think of Corda as Bitcoin++, but modified for industrial use cases where a decentralised p2p database is more immediately useful than a new coin.
Corda incorporates many ideas I had back when I was working on Bitcoin but couldn't implement due to lack of time, resources, because of ideological wars or because they were too technically radical for the community. So even though it's doesn't provide a new cryptocurrency out of the box, it might be interesting for the Bitcoin Cash community to study anyway. By resigning myself to Bitcoin's fate and joining R3 I could go back to the drawing board and design with a lot more freedom, creating something inspired by Bitcoin's protocol but incorporating all the experience we gained writing Bitcoin apps over the years.
The most common question I'm asked is whether I'd come back and work on Bitcoin again. The obvious followup question is - come back and work on what? If you want to see some of the ideas I'd have been exploring if things had worked out differently, go read the Corda tech white paper. Here's a few of the things it might be worth asking about:
I don't plan on returning to Bitcoin but if you'd like to know what sort of things I'd have been researching or doing, ask about these things.
edit: Richard pointed out some essays he wrote that might be useful, Enterprise blockchains for cryptocurrency experts and New to Corda? Start here!

What the Dogecoin Community was, versus what it has become - or why at this moment in time, I will no longer be a moderator with /r/dogecoin.

Before I start - no, there's no tl,dr at the bottom. But someone else might be nice enough to make one for you.
This is one of the more difficult posts that I've ever had the misfortune to write on here - and part of me is still laughing in the back of my mind, thinking "you're actually finding it difficult to step down from a community based on a doge put on a coin". The internet is truly a strange, and wonderful place; and the days I spent obsessing over a doge on a coin will certainly never be looked back on with regret.
But the days I choose to remember won't be the ones in recent times. At it's core, Dogecoin's foundations were so simple. "Mine for fun, tip for fun, oh wow I can buy stickers now, let's buy some stickers" was the Dogecoin I enjoyed. As it grew, it was something to be proud of - we took a joke coin, to being a serious coin with a joke on the front.
I think it was Billy who said Dogecoin was going to peak around our 200satoshi times - not in price, but rather in community. We were going to attract the type of people who would step over their grandmother for a quick profit. The joy of the coin was shortly going to be gone, because for whatever reason, it turned into the next big thing - even overtaking Litecoin on hashpower for a short period of time. I cannot stress how correct he was in saying this. The community, over time, turned toxic.
And this underlying nature was always there - take for example, way back in DecembeJan, where I posted a warning on this subreddit (and on irc), telling people that the now infamous Wolong was simply pumping and dumping; and that someone (namely, us), was going to find themselves holding the bag after he exits.
After stating this, on irc, I was warned that I was going to have my reddit account deleted. Almost every OP on IRC - bar one (we're going to come back to this) - had some extremely unfriendly things to say about me. Now, I will note the above threat fell on completely deaf ears; as I had a friend of mine in Reddit's admin team inform the user via PM, that he is not welcome to making threats on their behalf. But I digress - this is what I came to expect from the community.
On /dogecoin, I've got some heavily downvoted posts around this time, where I warned people against this. Everyone suddenly got obsessed with the idea that one man was practically turning lead into Gold. So few people actually had the foresight to see that a complete and total stranger was sitting around, offering to make people rich - and how this could potentially be scammy. Once the damage was done and Wolong left, the coin spiralled into a never-ending downwards spiral.
So, who's to blame for all this? Wolong, right? Or rather, the whales he mostly took credit for - as in my opinion, he lacks the intelligence to pull that off solo. That's where the damage was done, right?
No, according to a lot of our coin's community. The damage is the fault of the developers. I have received hatemail in the past, ranging from "your attempts to block multipools have degraded the coin's currency", to "your own selfish decision to not implement Proof of Stake has killed the coin". This situation followed shortly after a well co-ordinated witch hunt due to myself making a joke comment, paraphrased as "now that I've dev'd on the coin, I get all the dogecoin groupies, right?". It felt like some sort of surreal working environment that followed Murphy's Law to an actual personal level.
Then, after stepping back from Dogecoin dev to focus on College/my day job, I kept receiving PM's asking me to develop another dogecoin update to, "fix the prices" - because that's certainly a dev's job? I took on the role, and made the suggestion that we can begin a price taper (rather than halvenings), to lower the shock value of each halvening, considering they happen so rapidly. The responses ranged from negative, to threatening. Alongside this was an organised witch-hunt by The "official" Dogecoin Page on facebook, where users were encouraged to "let him know what we think!" - in regards to a suggestion that would need to have been approved by both the community, and our fellow devs before even being implemented in a git branch. Adding fuel to the fire, from a facebook page that prides itself on posting clickbait.
Then, there's how we began biting the hands that feed us. And this is the statement that will get me the most flak; Moolah does not benefit from Dogecoin, as much as Dogecoin benefits from Moolah. Seriously, they have a gigantic platform, and have made the most user-friendly, efficient way of making purchases with Doge. While 80%> of their transactions take place with Bitcoin, around 90% of their time is spent on this subreddit, defending themselves from baseless accusations, and having general FUD spread against them. It is absolutely toxic, and distressing to witness. The moment I accepted a job offer from +moolah_ , I too was met with a barrage of insulting, threatening, demanding, and generally disgusting messages; both in public, and private.
Let's get something very straight in regards to mods, and dogecoin devs - we are not paid. If I heard of a mod, or dogecoin dev turning down a job, because "the community might not like if I have a job doing something I love", I would restart the foundation with the sole purpose of kickstarting a fundraiser to send me over to that individuals home so I can punch them square in the jaw. The devs and mods are humans who lend their time to assisting YOU, for free. It is absolutely nobody's place - and never will be their place, to tell a mod whether or not they can accept employment, with any company on the planet. And in my personal case - a company who were entirely open to the idea of me continuing development and assisting with the Dogecoin software, on company time.
Yet I need to stand in the face of what - and as I'm stepping down as a mod, I'll choose my words less carefully here - a minority of users who I would identify as being absolute pricks, throwing accusations wherever they can, under the guise of free speech/"ITS NOT DIRECTLY AGAINST THE RULES", and other such bullshit that is carefully used in order to propagate bullshit against both a company that has invested a near insane amount of money into Dogecoin, the moderators, the developers, and anyone else who dare stand against the ideals they have set upon themselves and others in regards to the doge on the coin.
Coupled with that, we then have the internal toxicity - The ex-foundation member Ben leaking and spreading a highly edited video in order to "expose" Moolah (a video in which Ben's failed motive was to attempt to irritate Moolah staff members - and instead resulted in him making a legal ass of himself); we have Jackson who threw his toys out of the pram and called Dogecoin "cult-like", after he pointlessly threw about legal threats, due to his lack of understanding on what an opposition filing to a trademark meant.
Coupled with this - and something I will not go into detail on, is the end of Sporklin's tenure as a moderator. While the internal details, I again am not discussing on this thread - the reaction from the community? To insult, and belittle her. Phrases like "Good riddance", and "Fuck you, shill" were thrown at her, as though her work in moderating, alongside acting as a line of communication between devs both internally, and with the community; coupled with her time spent on IRC, counted for nothing. It was harrowing.
Don't get me wrong - there are still so many amazing members here on dogecoin, and those are the ones that will keep both the coin, and community alive; but those numbers are dwindling in the face of crypto drama, arguments, trolls, and fear. Those are the ones I try to protect; but more and more, in this position, I'm finding that more than ever, I'm being forced to protect myself. Only recently, I received a PM off a newly registered account, in regards to me accepting a job at Moolah - and their intention was to tell me that I had done something "evil", in their eyes. They proceeded then, to talk about my past/present charity work in detail as being hypocritical of my future self.
The problem is, a lot of this information would be in no way publicly known on this subreddit. To be able to tell me that I dyed my hair pink for a Cancer charity, or did fundraising for Movember? To be able to show me the photos of myself in doing so? That one PM summed up everything that had come to pass since my joining Dogecoin as a moderator and developer; so many people will be slow to thank, yet go to extreme lengths in order to intimidate, threaten, and insult.
And that is why it is time for me to step back. What's left of our community is a slowly becoming a husk of it's former self; and it's become a struggle to deal with.
This is not me pulling out of the community, nor pulling away my support for the coin, nor it's development - I still have plenty of respect left for the good sides of both. I hope to continue (re-running) ASIC giveaways once I have had some time to breath. And I hope that maybe someday in the future, conditions may become ripe for me to once again take up the position of a moderator. But until then, you can consider me, firmly out of your firing line.
One day, I shall come back. Yes, I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs, and prove to me I am not mistaken in mine.

FROM THE MAKER OF 'STATISM: THE MOST DANGEROUS RELIGION'

As a follow up/sequel (of sorts) to 'Statism: The Most Dangerous Religion' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6uVV2Dcqt0), I am currently working on a documentary length (60-90 minutes long) production with a working title of 'Voluntaryism: An Idea Whose Time Has Come' (although I am also considering the title 'Liberty Rising: The Philosophy of Anarcho-Capitalism'.
The film will be aimed at people who are either completely new to the philosophy of voluntaryism/anarcho-capitalism, or who are half way to becoming voluntaryists/anarcho-capitalists (i.e. current minarchists), and it will guide the viewer through the philosophical groundwork of voluntaryism/anarcho-capitalism, from the non-aggression principle, self ownership and the philosophical basis for property rights, to the fundamental economics and benefits of the free market (from an Austrian School perspective), the coercive nature of statism (and taxation), debunking all the most common philosophical justifications for the alleged legitimacy of the state (social contract theory, democratic consensus arguments, utilitarian/consequentialist arguments, et cetera) and, finally, it will address anarcho-capitalist alternatives to the "services" currently provided in a coercive, monopolistic, extortionate manner by the state.
The film will be made available for free on YouTube, although I am also planning to release it on DVD (at low cost), which people will be free to copy and distribute as much as they like to friends, family and total strangers.
I will be using plenty of narrated excerpts from both 'For a New Liberty' and 'The Ethics of Liberty' by Murray Rothbard, and I am hoping to also feature relevant snippets from talks/interviews by the likes of Stefan Molyneux, Tom Woods, Walter Block, Mike Huemer, Larken Rose, Hans-Hermann Hoppe, David Friedman, Robert Murphy, Lew Rockwell and others (providing I can get permission from all those people, and the relevant copyright owners).
The whole video montage will be compiled in such a way that each segment flows coherently into the next, and all of it will be "glued" together with narration written by myself but actually voiced by a paid narrator (I hate the sound of my own voice).
I have already been working on this project for over a year now, and I have made a lot of headway, but due to work constraints, I have been unable to work on it anywhere near as much as I would like (ideally I'd be working on it full time), and there's still a fair amount of work to do. In a desperate bid to finally get this project finished and released, I am reluctantly asking for assistance.
The film features an abundance of nifty motion graphics, animation and stock footage (all designed or paid for by myself, except for any free/public domain stock footage I've been able to find) to help visually illustrate the points made in the video. As anybody involved in motion graphic design or animation will know, these endeavours can be extremely time consuming. If anybody reading this is skilled in graphic design, motion graphic design, animation, narration, or any other relevant areas, and is interested in helping with the project, please get in touch at '[email protected]'. I will obviously credit anybody who helps in any way in the closing titles.
In addition to assistance with the technical side of things, in the coming weeks I will be starting a kickstarter campaign, accompanied by a trailer to give people an idea of the production quality, style and content of the film. Basically, in order to finish the film, I need funding, to pay for things like stock footage (which really isn't cheap), a narrator, studio headphones/monitors, a computer capable of rendering complicated, high definition motion graphics (without taking two days!), a decent studio microphone and a website to promote the film (including website development, web hosting and domain name).
I would never usually ask for funding. I worked on 'Statism: The Most Dangerous Religion' for three months straight, pretty much full time, with many sleepless nights and 48 hour editing marathons, but that is only 12 minutes long, and the new film will be 4-6 times longer than that, so I'm going to need help if this thing is going to get finished anytime soon!
'Statism: The Most Dangerous Religion' has now been translated into over 12 languages (the last time I checked), and has already had over 300,000 views (including the translated versions and reuploads). In my humble opinion, the new film is significantly better, more persuasive and aesthetically pleasing, so it has the potential to blow my previous effort out of the water and really make a huge impact in getting the ideas of liberty (specifically voluntaryism/anarcho-capitalism) spread around the world!
Well that's the end of my rant/begging. Watch this space for the trailer which will be released in the coming weeks/months, and please consider helping out with the kickstarter campaign which I will be starting soon!

Will you be my co-founder? (Professional Salary, Equity Stake)

For a long time, I've been advocating for a crowd-funded protocol layer built on top of bitcoin, using messages in the block chain to represent transfers of value. I wrote a paper last year (https://sites.google.com/site/2ndbtcwpape2ndBitcoinWhitepaper.pdf) about how such a layer could enable distributed exchange, distributed betting markets, better security features for your "savings" wallet, and self-stabilized user-created currencies built on top of it all for representing gold, dollars, crude oil, etc.
You can see me talk about how I want to invest in such a crowd-funded effort when I was on the Bitcoin Conference 2013 panel about "Bitcoin in the Future": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qdr_Z3hrqQ
I would love to invest in something like this (by purchasing the "coins" of the new protocol layer), but so far, nobody has tried it.
Obviously, I have thought about trying to launch such a thing myself, but there are two things holding me back:
1) I don't have anyone to do it with me. I'd really like to have a co-founder (or two) to work alongside me
2) I don't know how much money the crowd-funding effort would raise, and I don't want to launch such an effort unless I'm pretty sure it will succeed.
This thread takes a shot at solving both problems. I launched a poll on the bitcoin forum to see how much investor interest is out there (sister-post and poll is here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=226215.0)
Assumptions for the poll:
For finding a co-founder, the biggest requirement is to find someone who understands what I am trying to do, and agrees with the general approach (although not necessarily agreeing on every last detail). I need someone with strong technical skills and decent inter-personal skills. If they currently hold bitcoins, they should be an investor in the crowd-funding, but they would receive a professional salary and significant equity in the organization created by the crowd-funding, in addition to the ownership stake they bought in the new protocol layer.
I myself would invest the vast majority of my bitcoins in the crowd-funding (and would thereby own a lot of the "coins" of the new protocol layer), but unfortunately that is not enough to get the kind of money we would need to pay a couple professional salaries for at least a couple years until the enterprise becomes self-sustaining. (The organization gets a small percentage of the new protocol which slowly vests over time - the organization becomes self-sustaining by selling their stake in the protocol as needed once it vests).
Please vote in my poll, and post in this thread about why YOU should be my co-founder. You can learn more about me and my bitcoin pedigree here: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jrwillett (Also, please connect with me on LinkedIn!)

The end is neigh! Rilly has been accused of "noise" at tactic that effectively censors ourchain.slack.com by shoving everything up the memory hole. Dump of #general from then to now.

leithaus 6:32 PM If she redeems the AMP for a RHOC and even 1 RHOC is burned, then she has 1/(1B -1 ) of the total supply of RHOCs. (edited) 6:32 This is a strictly better position than her position in AMPs. 6:34 Now, we have gone over the arrangement between the Co-op and the Holdings company in detail many times. lexysis 6:34 PM Show us the documents leithaus 6:34 PM There have been infographics, discussions, all posted in videos. lexysis 6:34 PM Show us what the arrangement is in legal terms 6:34 this information should be given to everyone in a structured manner leithaus 6:35 PM It has been over the last 4 months. lexysis 6:36 PM We don't want an infographic. We want actual precise language. For example, it's not enough for you to say "don't worry about X because the company is legally bound to develop on the platform." You should give us the actual legal documents that precisely describe what the situation is. amp100 6:36 PM Keep ignoring Greg. Nobody watches those hangouts anymore thats why we all keep asking here! 007 6:37 PM @leithaus Please, all I'm asking is: what will be the total Rchain if 10 mil amp are swapped. Please no formulas just a number. lexysis 6:38 PM You're doing the equivalent of telling us that we should trust some smart contract code we've never seen, because you've told us in videos and infographics about how it works. Do you not see how this goes against the whole idea of this project? amp100 6:38 PM @ed.eykholt Ok mayeb I misquoted you, though that didn't change anything at all IMO. 'under any circumstances' is the same for me as 'in any case'. So the 105 million won't be changed 'in any case'. (now happy?) And nwo please answer what will hapopen if 10 million coins will be swapped. Pinned by fdt leithaus 6:39 PM As we posted back in February, we will burn the difference between what's in circulation versus what's redeemed. amp100 6:39 PM Where does teh burning come from if the Holding wont be touched! The 1:10 ratio cant be honored in that case. 6:40 As teh Holding company holds 105 million and teh total supply would be 100 million if 10 mill is swapped ed.eykholt 6:40 PM @amp100 No, I said there is no plan to return them; the whole sentence matters. (edited) Pinned by fdt leithaus 6:40 PM What's in circulation is roughly 115M, take away 10M, that's 105M burned. Leaving a total supply of 895M. amp100 6:40 PM Ed : 'in any case'. 6:40 SO thats why I ask this question abotu 10 million amps. Will that 'in any case' change? ed.eykholt 6:41 PM @amp100 Greg is addressing the question about supply. I'm not going to. amp100 6:41 PM Ok 6:41 So now we are getting somewhere Greg. 007 6:42 PM Thanks Greg!!! (edited) amp100 6:42 PM The Holding company keeps 105? +10 = 115 and teh rest gets burned. So then teh next question! How is this all gonna work with teh Rchain COOP having ZERO Rhocs? leithaus 6:43 PM No, you have misunderstood. 007 6:43 PM so only 105 mil Rchain would be burnt if 10 mill are swapped.?? leithaus 6:43 PM The Holding Company has what it has. End of story. 6:43 @007 that's correct. amp100 6:43 PM lol? Pinned by fdt leithaus 6:43 PM i have to double check the number of AMPs in circulation is 115M. amp100 6:43 PM OMG 6:44 This you coudl anwers very very easily a long time ago to all these people who ask here! 6:44 yes you kept ignoring and saying it was in some hangouts. 6:44 I cant believe this. 6:44 Anyway the dillution will be ridiculous to swappers. bad deal. 6:45 Thanks for finally answering , it cost me lots of valuable hours/days/weeks/months. Pinned by fdt leithaus 6:45 PM Assuming that is correct, if only 10M is redeemed, then 105RHOCS get burned. So, the total supply of RHOCs is 1000M - 105M = 895M. 007 6:45 PM I might be mistaken, but I recall a plan to burn MUCH more amps. leithaus 6:46 PM They aren't going to do that. 6:46 But, anyway, if you don't want to participate, don't. 6:46 We don't need this. We're doing it as a service to the people who were defrauded. 6:47 People who feel this doesn't serve their interests should definitely not participate. 007 6:49 PM Currently AMPs in circulation are 10% on total supply. If we maintain the same ratio (10 mill swapped) we should end with 100 mil Rchain??? (edited) leithaus 6:50 PM @amp100 - your calculations are incorrect. No matter how you calculate this, RHOC holders' positions are not diluted at all. They are improved. If you look at the position of liquid, they are in a much, much better position. If you look at the total supply they are in a slightly better position. amp100 6:50 PM no. as 10 million will be in circulation and a 895 million supply 6:51 Bad 6:51 Holdings companies coins are not in circulation yet. 6:51 This is very bad for investors/swappers or however the hell u wanan call it leithaus 6:51 PM Do whatever you think is right! 007 6:51 PM 10 mil rchain circulation and 895 millin supply DOES'T maintain the same synereo ratio amp100 6:52 PM You not maintain your promise Greg. leithaus 6:52 PM If you feel it doesn't serve you, please don't participate. ed.eykholt 6:53 PM @amp100 Holdings company RHOCs are in circulation. amp100 6:54 PM Synereo company hold abotu 850 million coins and 85 in circulation. Total supply is 1.1 x what SYnereo holds. In Rchains case its far from 1.1x. It's 9 x.:joy: (edited) 007 6:54 PM Back in January I understood that the ratio would be the same as Synereo. If only 10 mil Rchain are in circulation how do we get to 900 mil Rchain supply?? amp100 6:55 PM @ed.eykholt Do as Synereo does and you get a 115 million total supply. 6:55 10 million investors and 105 by company. (synereo 85 million investors and 850 million company) 6:56 This is teh worst deal ever, and not even close to all your promises Greg. 6:56 What a joke... 007 6:57 PM Wish I could get slack archive. What was said few months back is completely different. 6:59 This is NOT the same ratio Synereo I was promised! amp100 6:59 PM It's not even close..... leithaus 7:00 PM Again, please don't participate if it doesn't serve your interests. amp100 7:00 PM Synereo holds 1:10 (investors : synereo) If Rchain woudl do that it would be 10:100. 7:00 Greg is a big liar and never keeps his words. What a fking joke. 007 7:01 PM I remember we spokes about it here and understood that total amp swapped to rchain would be approximately 10% of total supply. (10% is the synereo ratio). amp100 7:01 PM Only cares about safing his ass from legal battles and only cares to enrich himself in a way that it looks like that isnt the case. 7:02 @007 we re fucked over once again. 007 7:03 PM @amp100 no need to be nasty.... we are here to get answers help decide if to swap or not. I have been waiting months for the swap to start. Burn ratio is not what we were promised back in January. 7:12 Well now we know.... will keep my amp's, maybe sell and get into ETH. 7:12 Rchain Good luck! 7:14 In January we were speculating on 30 mil amp being swapped. The problem with the way these Rchain devs think is that they will "get Rchain built faster" by tricking "investors" over and over. It isn't working. Ethereum and Cosmos are getting way more funding by making offers that are attractive to rational investors and sticking to their commitments. libertyzeal22 10:43 PM @leithaus w00t, it worked, awesome leithaus 10:44 PM If your ampTrgtAddr is not included, this is either because you did not send AMPs to the AMP target address supplied to you, or in 1 outlier case, you provided a bad ETH address. 10:44 @dc - many thanks! libertyzeal22 10:45 PM @rilly I don't think you understand how this ICO stuff works, the devs could literally wake up tomorrow and decide not to do this, or the theoretical basis of the software might just outright fail, you are looking for guarantees and there are none in this game. rilly 11:00 PM @libertyzeal22 I've done quite well predicting the future market of ETH and ATOM. Although Rchain is likely to be dominant, ethchain or credichain could be far more profitable to those who invest in ETH or CRED. libertyzeal22 11:06 PM @rilly the point i'm trying to make is that worrying about the finer points of the contract is a waste of energy, if you don't believe the team is authentic and has a chance of delivering on this project, then there is simply no reason to invest or hang around here. rilly 11:06 PM Because Greg and Co can and will dilute Rev to the point that so many people have acquired it without much effort that by the time of the announcement that a million billion Rev will be issued for the next fundraiser, the same thing will happen that has happened with AMP. Some may rather join ethchain. At least with credichain RHOC/Rev/etc would be redeemable but the rates may not be great, at that time. 11:07 Didn't Greg deliver a book? When did I say he wouldn't deliver? After a decade he wrote a book. Didn't someone say Rchain would take a decade? 11:08 I'm here because I think they are already delivering information goods. 11:08 That doesn't mean RHOC will be a better investment than ETH or CRED libertyzeal22 11:09 PM @rilly you're constanting attacking the dudes character saying he's effectively going to do a cramdown and screw everyone, so obviously you don't trust him, so i again i ask, why are you here? 11:10 @rilly actually n/m it doesn't matter. I don't care.. rilly 11:10 PM Here is what Greg just sent me "Hello! i have had complaints about your signal to noise ratio on slack. Additionally due to limits on history you are erasing important posts. i must ask you to confine yourself to more on topic commentary and become a bit more considerate of the public resource." 11:11 So what is on-topic in #general? 11:12 I'm censoring the community because Slack sucks everything up the memory hole. LOL rilly 11:20 PM @libertyzeal22 I can speak when spoken to or no? I'm here because I think Rholang and the RhoVM could be the most advanced contract language to date.

[Hiring] Tech Startup needs Media Relations Officer

About the Startup: Zurker is a social network operating under the following 9 domain names: zurker.com, zurker.co.uk, zurker.ph, zurker.in, zurker.ca, zurker.co.nz, zurker.com.au, zurker.eu and zurker.net.
We are a crowdfunded, member-owned, ethical alternative to Facebook and have raised more than $100,000 from our members, without using Kickstarter. The average contribution is about $40 and the maximum contribution is limited to $500 to ensure that the network remains equitable and not dominated by any tycoons. Our motto is "Democracy makes us different" and this slogan itself was devised by a member. Some of our members are currently actively engaged in a complex, ongoing process to draft a Constitution for the governance of Zurker.
Zurker is the polar opposite of Facebook: we are not owned by the 1%, and we do not treat the userbase as something to be exploited for maximum profit. Members' privacy is guaranteed and so is their Freedom of Speech (on their own posts).
Last but not least, Zurker has devised a business strategy for remaining ad-free forever while generating more per-capita revenue than Facebook. That strategy is to leverage our democratic credentials and issuing a trustable digital currency - the Zen, an alternative to Bitcoin. The Zen is designed to be stable and reliable for practical use (unlike Bitcoin which swings wildly in value).
About the Job: The Media Relations Officer's job is to get Zurker and the Zen into the media. While we have a great story to tell, journalists are unlikely to feature us unless we actively reach out to them. The Media Relations Officer's job is to persuade nationally known bloggers and journalists into covering us. This is not an easy job. It's not a matter of sending a few emails. Top-tier tech reporters are deluged by press releases and emails, and routinely ignore everything. You will need to deploy every ounce of your considerable charm and spend all day on the phone calling the journalists up and talking to them about Zurker, without irritating them - the last thing we need is a tetchy review. After a few months, the focus will shift from generating coverage to developing a strong working relationship with the media. You need to make friends with the people who write about us, and help them understand why writing about developments at Zurker is important.
Here is an example of organic coverage we got without us contacting the journalist. We need more of this. Lots more, on a regular basis. And that's where you come in.
About the Candidate: This job can be fulfilled by (a) either an inexperienced yet bright-eyed and bushy-tailed person who makes up for lack of experience with energy, charm, and infectuous enthusiasm, (b) someone with experience in tech publicity and who has the right connections in the form of 300+ media people in their phone book. Either way you need to have terrific, precise communication skills, the ability to absorb and retain diverse information, and an X factor that will make people pay attention to what you are saying.
About the Compensation: In Zurker's case, growth and traffic directly translate into financial support. When people sign up with Zurker and find out what we are about, a very large proportion automatically support us without being prompted: Growth = Funding. That means, if you do an awesome job and get us into the right blogs and newspapers, we will get more traffic, meaning we will get more funding, and we can pay you more. The flip side is that if you do a lousy job or you do not do your job at all, we will not be able to pay you. If you have no results after 14 days in the job, your employment will voided without pay. Assuming you actually do your job as a publicist and manage to get bloggers and the media to cover us, we will pay you $2,000 ~ $5,000 per month depending on performance. The right candidate, who gets results, will be paid generously.
If you are an experienced Silicon Valley publicist, you will probably get better compensation at a Fortune 1,000 corporation. But think about what's on the table: on the one hand you have a job where you can shovel spin generated by a corporation that most probably is raping consumers, employees, factory workers, the environment, or all of the above, and on the other hand you can help fight the good fight for an ethical, transparent, democratic community.
About the Location: You will work from your home. We will pay your phone bill and travel expenses. Ideally you should be located on the East Coast in the environs of New York, or on the West Coast, near San Francisco. However, if you are an experienced publicist who burned out and settled in Smalltown, USA, because you wanted to be further away from the rat race and closer to rabbits, Smalltown, USA, is fine.
About the Responsibility: Whether or not you do your job right will affect more than some numbers on quarterly report by middle management. Whether or not you do your job right affects the hopes and dreams of the countless ordinary folks who have backed this project with their hard-earned wages. Schoolteachers. Bartenders. Truckers. They have all invested in Zurker because it represents a chance for the 99% to level the playing field. Income disparity in the US, the UK, and many other countries is skewed beyond reason and Zurker is one one small step towards turning the tide.
About our Trajectory: If you are tech savvy you may be wondering why we need the media for growth. Aren't social platforms supposed to grow virally? Well, we did grow virally, and we are growing. Initially, we were growing so fast we were asking journalists to hold off coverage - the platform and system weren't ready for widespread exposure. We are ready now, but while focusing on development rather than growth, we lost some momentum due to our no longer being the hottest and newest startup on the block. Many of our members - who have a vested interest in Zurker's success - make an effort to reach out to their friends, but invitations to join Zurker are routinely ignored because who needs another social network, right? Of course, once folks find out how fundamentally different we are from Facebook, they see the value in Zurker. But it's hard to figure this out when you just got an invitation to join Zurker. We have found that media coverage is the most effective tool for spreading the word about Zurker - even more effective than invites from family members.
About our Platform: Tumblr got more than $100 million in funding. Pinterest got more than $300 million. We got $100,000+ and most of it went to engineering and hosting. We haven't received enough funding for us to develop a product that's awesome enough for people to have an orgasm just by looking at our site. But considering that we started from scratch, it's pretty good. It got better little by little over the past year. In many respects, Zurker is actually better than Facebook: we have hashtags (like Twitter) and we have nested comments (like Reddit). Our product has come along way, and we've done good work with meagre resources, but we need a lot more funding for it to be smooth enough for world domination.
Requirements
Prohibitions
Under no circumstances may the Media Relations Officer "wing it." You may not make assumptions or make up answers to questions you do not know. If you are the glib type who always has a smooth answer, this job is not for you. You MUST be able to stop and admit that "I'm sorry, I don't know the answer to that, I'll have to get back to you." This job is about you accurately representing Zurker and serving as an ambassador for Zurker. A lying smooth talker with an inflated ego is not the right person to represent Zurker. If you make a mistake, you must be willing to apologize and make the correction. You must put your ego aside when serving the revolution.
Application and Hiring
Send an email to [email protected]. There is no need to include a resume or CV. Just write one or two paragraphs about why you want the job and why we should hire you. If we like you, we will ask for your resume. If we like the resume, we'll call you up for a phone interview. If you pass the phone interview, you start immediately.
EDIT: rephrased location pursuant to feedback in comments

If anybody would like to contribute via Bitcoin prior to the release of the trailekickstarter campaign, the address is: 1JfweLVprPCnUmRKpqC9uK7NZbZjt9XazW
Or, if you'd like to help out via Paypal, the address is: [email protected]
Anybody who donates or helps out in any way will be credited in the closing credits.
Many thanks,
Harvey Lester
